I have attended to this event, Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous at May 10th, 2018 7 PM to 8 PM. The event was presented by the short four different people, Roberta Raffaeta, Maru Garcia, Kelly Nipper, and Ariel Levi Simons. Some of them were Artists and some of the were students. One of the presentations was talking about their projects that is studying, portraying and assessing examples of scientific practice in interdisciplinary work this presentation reminds me of Week 1 topic, Two Cultures. During the presentation she empathized that collaborations of sciences and humanities with reference to contributions of design and arts. According to the Charles Parcey Snow's idea there are two distinct cultures literary intellectuals and natural scientists. As we have seen until Week 6, nature has been an interesting field for the artists and Joe Davis is considered as the pioneer of the Bio-Art, art of natural biology. His idea is that the genomes can be a new palette for an artist. He started to convince molecular biologist to synthesize DNA and then inserted into genomes of bacteria. There are some ethical issues on the animals examined or treated for the art work, and technical issue that scientist should be involved to perform the art. One of the most iconic Bio-Arts is the fluorescent bunny, by Eduardo  Kac . The fluorescent bunny is created by French scientists inserting fluorescent jellyfish's gene into a bunny using micro injection. The most interesting fact from this week's lecture video, I was surprised that the plastic surgery came out of the war and it has been developed since about 4000 years ago and came from east, although I thought It was developed and operated very recently. During World War I, many soldiers lost their limps, skin, and bones in face. Apparently, this is resulted as a huge advance in plastic surgery. Furthermore, Professor Warwick underwent an operation to surgical implant a silicon chip into his forearm. The chip allows to monitor the movement.  This is Stelarc's work. He is an artist from Australia, and used his body as museum. One of his pieces is called "The Third Hand". The motions of the hand are controlled by the electrical signals. This was completed developing in 1980 and was semi-permanent attached to his body and this has been part of the idea of cyborg. I have attended to the event "Acoustical Visions" by Bill Fontana, at UCLA Broad Arts Center. First of all, I was really confused by the title of the event. Nothing came up to my mind because I thought that "Acoustic" and "Vision" run counter to each other. However, I changed my mind after the event. He said that the concept of Acoustic Visions grew out of his life long. The sounds that makes and the images that a sound makes and evokes. He is inspired for the large body of work have been primal environments, landscapes and structures. First Power Point During the event, Bill Fontana had power point that contains only few words, but many pictures of structures and views. Michael Faraday According to the lecture video by Professor Victoria Vensa, it described Michael Faraday who contributed to the study of electromagnetism, and Nikola Tesla who is electrical engineer and contributed to the AC electric supply system. Since I am an Electrical Engineering student, I was really familiar with them. Electrical Engineering would not exist without the contribution of them. I was so interested that how they are correlated and contributed to each other. As the Robotics, machines, are developed as the form of printer, camera, and instrument, Art are developed as well. Fibonacci's Spiral Since  I am an engineering major, I am familiar with mathematics. However, I have never thought that mathematics is related to art before the lecture. The most interesting fact in this lecture was Mathematics' contribution on evolution of art. As I was watching the lecture video by Professor Victoria Vesna, there was a mention about Fibonacci's sequence. When I was taking Discrete Mathematics in UCLA, I learned about the Fibonacci's sequence. The sequence has the pattern that the next number is the sum of the previous number and current number. (1,1,2,3,4,8,13,21...) I did not actually think of any correlation between the sequence and art. However, as I researched more about it, I could catch the correlation easily. This is called the Fibonacci's spiral which is the imagery of the sequence. UCLA Campus Map Charles Percy Snow insisted the two distinct cultures of literary intellectuals and natural scientists.  Since I am majoring the Electrical Engineering, I am staying Boelter hall, while I am staying at campus. As you can see on the campus map, the red pin Boelter hall is located on the south side of the campus and near Boelter hall there are Engineering, Math and Science buildings. However, on the north side of the campus there are many Art related buildings and sculptures. This represent the idea of two cultures. Although, these are all located in the UCLA campus, vividly there is separation in terms of location between natural science and literary intellectuals, two cultures.
